Analytics / Metrics catalog
# Every metric in one place, with how they connect
The metrics catalog lists every metric in your semantic layer, with its description, category and how often it is used. Anyone can explore a metric over time, and metric trees show which metrics drive which.

Problem
## Nobody can find the metric that already exists
When metrics are hidden inside dashboards and YAML files, people rebuild them, name them differently and end up with two numbers for the same thing.
- 01 The same metric gets rebuilt under a new name.
- 02 Business users don't know which metrics they can trust.
- 03 Nobody can see which metrics move the one that matters.
How it works
## Browse, explore and connect your metrics

Connect
01 Metrics catalog
### Search every metric and see where it's used
Find metrics by name or description, filter by category, and see how popular each one is and which charts use it.
Illustrative example
Metrics catalog
net_revenue is used in 14 charts across 5 dashboards.

FAQ
## Questions, answered
### Where does the catalog get its metrics? +
From your semantic layer. Every metric you define in dbt or Silicon YAML appears in the catalog, filtered by each person's permissions and user attributes.
### Can we hide metrics from business users? +
Yes. Set a default visibility in silicon.config.yml and override it for any model or metric in its YAML.
### What is a metric tree? +
A diagram of how metrics relate. Add drivers to a metric in YAML and the canvas connects them automatically, or draw connections by hand.
### Is the metrics catalog generally available? +
The catalog and canvas are in beta, so some details may change. Saved trees are experimental and turned on per organization.
