# Pipeline coverage: Formula and dbt YAML | Silicon

URL: https://meetsilicon.com/metrics/pipeline-coverage/

> Pipeline coverage is the ratio of open pipeline value to the sales target for the same period.

## Formula
Pipeline coverage = open pipeline value / quota
## Why it matters
Coverage shows whether there is enough pipeline to hit target. A common rule of thumb is three times quota, adjusted for your win rate.
## Common pitfalls
- Only count opportunities expected to close in the period.
## Define it in dbt for Silicon
Add this to your model's YAML. Aggregate metrics sit under a column's meta.metrics; ratios are type: number metrics that reference other metrics. Rename models and columns to match your project.
schema.yml Copy
models:
- name: fct_pipeline_periods
meta:
metrics:
pipeline_coverage:
type: number
sql: ${open_pipeline} / NULLIF(${quota}, 0)
description: Pipeline as a multiple of quota
columns:
- name: open_amount
meta:
metrics:
open_pipeline:
type: sum
description: Open pipeline closing this period
- name: quota_amount
meta:
metrics:
quota:
type: sum
description: Sales quota for the period
Once it's defined, anyone can ask about pipeline coverage in plain English and get an answer built on this definition. See the metrics reference for every option.
