# Net revenue: Formula and dbt YAML | Silicon

URL: https://meetsilicon.com/metrics/net-revenue/

> Net revenue is total revenue after refunds, discounts and returns are subtracted.

## Formula
Net revenue = gross revenue − refunds − discounts − returns
## Why it matters
Gross revenue overstates what the business keeps. Net revenue is the figure finance reports and the one most teams mean when they say "revenue".
## Common pitfalls
- Refunds often land in a later period than the original sale; decide which date you attribute them to.
## Define it in dbt for Silicon
Add this to your model's YAML. Aggregate metrics sit under a column's meta.metrics; ratios are type: number metrics that reference other metrics. Rename models and columns to match your project.
schema.yml Copy

Once it's defined, anyone can ask about net revenue in plain English and get an answer built on this definition. See the metrics reference for every option.
